World Porridge Day: Gingerbread Porridge

October 10, 2017

Today is World Porridge Day! Luckily for me, I love oats. I find them so filling and satisfying so I can actually go through the whole morning without snacking. Plus, you can make it as personal and be as creative as you want with toppings! And it takes less than 5 minutes to make!

World Porridge Day

Where did World Porridge Day come from you may be asking? Well, porridge is a national dish of Scotland. Every year in the Scottish Highland village of Carrbridge, the World Porridge Making Champion  event takes place. Carrbridge joined forces with Mary's Meals who work to spread food to 500 000 children in 16 of the world's poorest countries. India, Malawi, Kenya, and Haiti are just a few of the countries who benefit from this cause so grab a bowl of porridge now! After all, it is for a good cause.

Today, I made gingerbread oats which actually tasted rather Christmassy! (That's right, I said the C word). I find the spices gave it some heat so it will be perfect for those colder mornings. Here is the recipe I used so you can make it for yourself.

Serves 1
Sprinkle of gingerbread
Sprinkle of nutmeg
Sprinkle of cinnamon
1/2 cup oats
3/4 cup oat milk (or other plant milk)
1/2 banana
3 almonds
1 date
1 teaspoon chia seeds
1 teaspoon shredded coconut
1 teaspoon linseed

  1. Measure out the oats and the plant milk into a bowl. Sprinkle on the spices (as much or as little as you want) and stir.
  2. Cook in a microwave for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Whilst it is cooking, slice a banana and chop up a date.
  4. Once cooked, top the porridge with all the ingredients.
  5. Tuck in and enjoy!
